She was built half a world away, and once worked in Pennsylvania, but now she steams through the Nutmeg State on former New Haven Railroad trackage. She's Valley Railroad #3025, a Chinese Mikado hard at work hauling tourists in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Come along with Pentrex as we share the story of this most interesting 2-8-2.

We'll talk to renowned railroad photographer Tom Nanos, who describes the engine's rebuild in Connecticut after a devastating roundhouse fire in Pennsylvania. Next we'll go trackside as #3025 struts her stuff on a chartered photographer's train. Then we'll watch as two Mikados are steamed up for a day's work - a rare sight in the 21st century. All this and more awaits you in this new Pentrex release: 3025 - A Chinese Mikado in the Connecticut River Valley.

Please note that this review is not biased by the fact that the producer used a photo of mine in the production (YAY).

That being said, I love this video of New Haven 3025. It's a great look at the return to service and operation of 3025. There is a short backstory on the locomotive, how Chinese steam came to the Valley RR (twice), how it got restored the way it did and why, and then the film jumps right into the action. This includes footage of a rare photo freight charter, where the engine was turned on the wye in Old Saybrook (sadly, no footage of the engine turning itself) to face the opposite direction as normal for a two-day charter. This production features footage from the photo freight on the first day, but not the passenger charter on the second day (when I was in attendance). There is also great footage from normal operations later on in the same year.

I'd definitely recommend picking this DVD up if you have a chance!

I particularly enjoyed this DVD because I lived in Connecticut for 25 years and visited the Valley RR many times, even riding on the locomotive once. I think the DVD gave good coverage of the railroad and the operations, except that there might have been more scenes of the station and a little more of the riverboat.

I bought this program expecting serious coverage of the restoration and rebuild, alas there is very little. You will not be taking a nap with this program as 3025 talks...and talks LOUD! Definitely an attention getter. The Valley people did a fine job "americanizing" the locomotive and it shows. If anything, I learned there is much more to the Valley operation than I was aware of. Interesting and informative describes this release. Whether kids would enjoy this depends on the age of the kids.

Narration: Could have used more.

A lifelong resident of Connecticut, I have visited the Valley Railroad (Essex Steam Train & Riverboat) many times. The railroad has a lot to offer; aging steam and diesel locomotives, classic Pullman coaches, equipment displays and beautiful scenery. Operations include regular tourist runs, various sponsored freight and passenger extras and the Essex Clipper dinner train. The focus of this particular production though is the Valley Railroad's "new" 2-8-2 #3025. The locomotive's history, acquisition and restoration by the Valley Railroad is described in detail in a fun and interesting way. There are some distinct differences between the 3025 and the actual New Haven locomotives that she is meant to represent, but overall, is as close to the real thing as you can get. None of the actual New Haven 2-8-2 locomotives exist today.

Because the focus of the DVD is the 3025, the program is worth every penny. It is a shame however that more of what the Valley Railroad has to offer was not covered, including the Riverboat connection. Having ridden the Valley Railroad hundreds of times since I was a child, I knew pretty much all of the locations shown, but maps and graphics would have been useful for those unfamiliar with the line.

Some highlights from the show include a photo freight, beautiful scenery along the Connecticut River and a meet between the 3025 and the Valley Railroad's other 2-8-2 #40. Two operating steam locomotives side by side in 2012? Yep, right here in Connecticut! The 2013 season is several weeks away, so I would encourage anyone and everyone to purchase this DVD and visit the Valley Railroad this year. The DVD and a visit to the Valley Railroad are well worth the cost.

Well 4 Years ago I rode on that tourist line twice. Once on Memorial day weekend with #40, The other In September with 3025. When I saw a preview for this DVD I was shocked That Not only Pentrex Was There, But I was At the Same Trip At the Same Time With My Dad. Look For Me Waving At The Pentrex Crew.
