The Winchester and Western Railroad came to be in 1916, operating from Winchester, Virginia to Gore, Virginia and beyond, ending at Wardensville, West Virginia. Through the depression years and the tapping out of the forest reserves, the original line was scaled back to Gore, Virginia, just 50 miles in length. The former Conrail line from Winchester to Hagerstown, Maryland was obtained in 1986. The W & W interchanges with CSX and NS. The major customer is a large sand quarry in Gore, owned by Unimin (parent of the W & W). An isolated portion of the W & W exists in New Jersey to serve more Unimin properties. This program was made in 1992 with scenes in Gore and Alco cab rides to Hagerstown. - All color - Maps - Narration |
