Union Pacific 'Big Boy' #4014 returned to the rails again in July, this time heading east from the steam shop in Cheyenne, WY on a tour of the upper Midwest. While the "Great Race to Ogden" was a doubleheader with 4-8-4 #844, this tour was the first solo trip for #4014. Our coverage begins in Omaha, NE as the "Big Boy" pulled a one-way public excursion east to Boone, IA as a fundraiser for the Union Pacific Museum in Council Bluffs.
After the public excursion to Boone, #4014 traveled north through Iowa on the former Rock Island 'Spine Line' to St. Paul, MN. The Big Boy then continued to Duluth, MN utilizing BNSF trackage rights - the first time any UP steam locomotive has visited the Twin Ports. You'll see #4014 crossing the impressive Kettle River bridge in Sandstone, MN before meeting Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range 2-8-0 #332 at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth.
