Railroaders work hard on the Gateway Sub-a place of awesome landscapes and exciting railroad operations. This former Western Pacific highline is known for its isolation. Much of the secluded countryside is dark territory where crews run via Track Warrant Control and manually operate switches after meeting other trains.
Traveling aboard a BNSF freight train between Keddie, California and Klamath Falls, Oregon, the journey along the Inside Gateway takes you past Pit River Canyon and other remote areas accessible only by train. The ride along the former Great Northern track above Bieber is a fast-paced run through pine forests and across the semi-arid lands to the north, with stunning vistas of Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta in the distance.
