Review of DM&IR Yellowstones - Giants of Steam DVD

 4.3 of 5 (4)
The massive Yellowstone type 2-8-8-4 locomotives operated by the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range railroad in Minnesota were among the largest steam locomotives to ever run, and in 1958 and 1959 they were still hard at work. When other railroads in the United States were either entirely dieselized or nearly so, the DM&IR Yellowstones soldiered on for a few extra years. In this video, which was from original 16mm film shot by the late Maynard Laing, we visit the area on different trips, and enjoy pacing, lineside, and engine servicing with these famous locomotives. Incredible sequences where two of these monsters pass is hard to imagine, and what makes it all the more unique is that Mr. Laings longtime friend, Elwin Purington was there with his reel to reel audio tape recording capturing the sounds of these engines. Now some 40 years later we have merged the sights and sounds together for an enjoyable experience that will explore the history and excitement of the DM&IR Yellowston
