There's only one operating, narrow gauge, wood-burning 4-4-0 in the United States today - The Eureka and Palisade Number 4. Built by Baldwin in 1875, this one hundred fourty-three year old steam locomotive has been perfectly restored to its original splendor, complete with gleaming brass fittings, ornate decorations, gold filigree striping, and polished oak cab.

Pentrex joined the Number 4 on its 9-day visit to the Durango & Silverton, one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railroads in North America. The locomotive traveled by truck from its home in Las Vegas, Nevada to the San Juan Range of southwestern Colorado for this special event.

The sight of this immaculately reconstructed historic artifact braving three percent grades, razor sharp curves, and precarious ledges high above the Animas River is awesome.
