In 2001, LTV Mining's plant site and dock shut down operations in the arrowhead of Minnesota. In the summer of 2008, Cliffs Erie revived the line for one last time. They brought back the famous set of F-9 locomotives to move taconite fines from the former LTV dock at Taconite Harbor to the Hoyt Lakes mine site for transloading onto trains for the Severstal Steel plant in Baltimore, Maryland. Only a handful of these trains were operated and C. Vision was granted special access to ride in the cab between Taconite Harbor and Tunnel Siding! Not only will you get a chance to view the scenic beauty of northern Minnesota from these 1956 built locomotives, but we also captured several trackside views from Taconite Harbor to Hoyt Lakes, including shots of the very last train that ran on October 28, 2008. The sound of this A-B-B-B-A set of F-9's grinding up the grade out of the Lake Superior dock will amaze any rail enthusiast! You even get to view the train going through the long tunnel f |
