In 1968, the New York Central, with lines from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Chicago all merging at Selkirk, NY, took advantage of the location of the small town's strategic location and built a massive facility to handle the job of classifying freight to and from the Northeast's major population centers. Selkirk Yard sprawls over 1250 acres and can classify up to 2700 cars per day. It also operates a major locomotive shop, an auto rack unloading terminal and serves two major customers located nearby. About 80 trains arrive or depart every day. |
