Coaster, formally known as Coast Express Rail, operates on a 41-mile stretch of the former Santa Fe "Surf Line" in southern California between San Diego and Oceanside. Popular with both commuters and tourists, Coaster carries over 1.5 million riders per year along some of the most spectacular coastline in North America.
This production takes you to each one of Coaster's eight stations, including the beautiful and historic Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego, as well as other locations along the line. Our video footage is augmented by historic and current photographs, and a thoroughly researched narrative.
You'll see Coaster's F40PH-2C and F59PHI locomotives in action, along with Amtrak's Surfliners and BNSF freight trains. You'll see the San Diego Trolley, too, operating under wire on its own tracks.
