Ex-railroad man turned hobo, Larry Doyle, is given a second chance to earn an honest buck in the busy, train yards of the Midwest. Doyle's benefactor, tough-as-nails rail boss Dan Thorn, is convinced that the unwashed vagabond is, at heart, actually a proud, working man. Things work out well until Doyle falls for Thorn's fiancee, Mary Ryan. A showdown between the two men in a dark, rain-drenched switching yard ends in tragedy when Thorn is struck down by a speeding locomotive. His severe head injury requires emergency surgery, but the nearest hospital is 100 miles away in Chicago. Thorn's only hope lies with his rival, Larry Doyle, who volunteers to break all rail speed records in a last-ditch effort to save his boss' life.

The big trains are the true stars of this early sound epic from RKO Radio Pictures, filmed on location in Montana in 1930. Robert Armstrong and Jean Arthur both went on to wide-spread fame – Armstrong in 1933's King Kong and Arthur in 1936's Mr. Deeds Goes To Town. Prolific filmmaker George B. Seitz, who began his Hollywood career writing for the famous 1914 silent seriat,~"The Perils of Pauline, and would later go on to direct almost all of Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy movies, brings a powerful, iron-edged realism to Danger Lights. Highlights include a spectacular tug-of-war between two powerful locomotives as well as "a thrilling 100-mph rail race to Chicago.

Given the technical difficulties involved, truly outstanding for a 1930 movie. Shot on location on West Lines end of CMStP&P RR (i.e., Milwaukee Road). A must-have for any railfan or early 20th Century history buff.

While not the most well-known railroad movie, it surely is one that would interest any railfan, especially those of the Milwaukee Road. I'm not going to go over the plot line here. All I will say is that you get a really great glimpse of the MW's steam operation of the late 20's and 30's. There's some great scenes in the actual shops as well as their famous bridges and trestles. There's even a surprise one-of-a kind maintenance-of-way car that makes an appearance. One of the most breathtaking scenes in any train movie can be found in Danger Lights. Here, you will see Engineer Doyle climb out down the side of his cab and oil the gears while the train is running at 80 mph! Interestingly, the name of the railroad is never mentioned in the movie, but its logos seemingly everywhere! Well worth the price if you want to watch a nice historical train movie.

Old movie, good for its vintage. Somewhat hokey premise for the story line, but great train scenes. I enjoyed the movie, and will watch it again. The Locomotive Tug-of-War scene around the thirty minute mark was a one of a kind scene.

If you like movies with old steam locomotives, this is a must-watch movie.

An excellent movie with interesting characters, a compelling story line and great train action! We've enjoyed watching over and over again the great train tug-o-war. The high speed train finale is a highlight not to be missed! Great movie!
