Construction was completed in 1912 on the portion of the Piedmont & Northern Railway that was located in Gaston County North Carolina.
Controlled by industrialist James B. Duke, P&N was designed to be an electric interurban railway and offer freight service. Many textile mills located along the line, and Duke supplied them electricity.
Passenger service lasted until 1951. From 1969 until 1991 the railway was operated by Seaboard Coast Line and later CSX .
In 2012, the State of North Carolina refurbished the line in hopes to attract new industrial development in Gaston County NC.
In this video program we watch professional railroaders handle daily operations, servicing the customers from Ranlo NC to the CSX interchange in Mount Holly NC on the new Piedmont & Northern.
