This legendary mainline was built in the 1850's as the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad, linking Lynchburg, VA to Bristol, TN, via the Roanoke River and New River Valleys.
Mostly destroyed during the Civil War, it was rebuilt post war and consolidated into the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. Reorganized as the Norfolk and Western Railway after the finical panic of the 1870s, capacity was enhanced and double tracked in 1890s as the N&W expands to West Virginia and its abundant coal traffic.
In this program, we follow this historic line from CP Walton (junction of the Pulaski District and the N&W main to Bluefield WV) to Shawsville,VA, via Christiansburg, a distance of 17 miles.
Recent tunnel clearance improvements now permit double stack container trains to use this route, linking the port of Norfolk, VA to the Midwest..
Today mostly westbound intermodal and manifest trains use this line, with heavy eastbound coal and grain trains routed via the parallel former Virginian Railway. Sadly, we also witness the replacement of the iconic N&W position light signals that have stood guard here for many decades.
